HIGHLIGHTS | Manohar Parrikar, leader of BJP and chief minister of Goa, the man who won many battles is no more with us after fighting a long battle of cancer. He passed away on 17 March 2019 at the age of 63 years at his residence in Panaji. He laid to rest at Miramar beach.
Parrikar had been in and out of hospitals in Goa, Mumbai, Delhi, and New York since February last year after he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He knows how to do work with benefit like he reduced the tax component in Goa on fuel. He is hailed and appreciated for this move along with the fact that how he worked with the tube in his nose. He always worked for the development of modern Goa. He worked under many infrastructural projects like construction of bridges and many more. He died in the midst of his 4th term .
The news of his demise was first shared by President Ram Nath Kovind from his official twitter handle on March 17 , 2019 and was later shared by other prominent leaders and personalities of the country, including the ones from opposition.
Tributes to the BJP leader called him a “true patriot” and a “symbol of simplicity in politics“. Parrikar is being accorded a state funeral. Leaders who lined up to place wreaths on Parrikar are Vijai Sardesai, Congress leader Girish Chodonkar, MPs Narendra Sawaikar and Shripad Naik, Ramdas Athawale, Suresh Prabhu, NSA Ajit Doval and BJP chief Amit Shah. Also, Indian Institute of technology, Bombay (IITB) did preparations to give tribute to Manohar.
“The state government has decided to observe a one-day state mourning as a mark of respect to the departed dignitary. The national flag will fly at half-mast on March 18,” an order issued by Haryana Chief Secretary’s office.
Talks of formation of a new government in Goa have picked pace and Congress being the largest party in the assembly has taken the matter to the governer Mridula Sinha . The delegation led by Chandrakant Kavlekar along with 14 congress MLAs handed over the letter to her.
The opposition party had earlier written to Sinha, staking a claim to form the government on Friday and then again on Sunday.
The strength of the House has been reduced to 36 as BJP MLA Francis D’Souza died earlier this year and the Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar’s demise on Sunday along with the resignations of two Congress MLAs Subhash Shirodkar and Dayanand Sopte last year.
