Theni | Police opened fired in the air in Andipatti, Theni district of Tamil Nadu on Tuesday late night to seize bundles of cash from AMMK (Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam) party workers. The team which did the raid consisted of Officers from the election commission and income tax department.
The AMMK workers were actually preventing the police and the officers from entering their office where the cash was kept. With no option left out, the police opened fire in the air four times and also did mild lathi charge to disperse the crowd. No one was injured in this incident. The money was bundled which was kept to be distributed among the voters for the second phase of election which is scheduled to be held on 18th April in Andipatti.
I-T Director General (investigations) Chennai, B. Murali Kumar said, “Unaccounted cash worth Rs 1.48 crore was seized. It was neatly packed in 94 packets and envelops on which the ward number, number of voters and the amount of Rs 300 per voter was written.” The place from where the cash was seized belongs to the AMMK party. In addition to this, the AMMK party office was found functioning on the ground floor.
Rs 300 was planned to be distributed for each voter in order to bribe them before the election. A sworn statement from a person present in the premises was recorded; according to him Rs 2 crore in cash was brought to this party office for distributing the cash to the voters of Andipatti panchayat on April 16th.
Initially, the AMMK party workers were not allowing the IT department officers to come inside the AMMK party office and seize the cash, after that the police open fire to let the officers do their work. Hearing the firing sound the miscreants fled away with a few packets and the remaining 1.48 crore was seized. A postal ballot paper for Andipatti assembly marked for the AMMK candidate was found and was seized. The police have arrested three men from the premise.
According to a senior official, the department will be sending a report on the operation to the Central Board of Direct Taxes and the Election Commission in New Delhi regarding this incident. The district collector and SP had come to the spot and supervised the security condition in the premise. Even the district police have filed an FIR against a number of people who were involved in this incident.

Yesterday only the election to the Vellore Lok Sabha seat was canceled by President Ram Nath Kovind on the recommendation from the Election Commission. According to the report submitted by the IT department; on the use of money to bribe and influence the voters, the election was canceled. The I-T Department had seized ₹11.48 crore from the house of DMK treasurer Duraimurugan, whose son Kathir Anand is the party candidate for Vellore. And now this Andipatti incident has occurred.
